Champion in Her Sport, Champion for Moms: Allyson Felix Runs for Us All

The track stretches before Olympian Allyson Felix like a favorite memory, familiar and well-traveled. She knows the curve of the oval track and how it gradually tugs itself into the straightened home stretch. Her body is coiled like a steel spring, power running through her, muscles ready for the race. She has done this so many times and won 11 Olympic medals and 20 World Athletics Championship medals. But that was before an emergency C-section for her first child a few months ago and before these months of recovery.

Now, motherhood has expanded the track-and-field star’s definition of purpose and of being a champion.

Perfection in Her Pre-Mom Life

Before Allyson became a mother, she had spent most of her career trying to be the perfect athlete. Her life revolved around training, hours and hours of pouring everything into her purpose of being the best athlete in the world.

And she reached that goal, medaling in 5 different Olympic Games. Plus, earning World Championship medals between 2005 and 2022.

Like many women focused on realizing a dream, Allyson devoted almost all her energy and resources to making it happen. When she became pregnant with her daughter, she just folded pregnancy into her career and continued training as safely as possible.

Severe preeclampsia, however, changed all that.

How an Emergency C-Section Gave Her a Greater Purpose

Elevated blood pressure. Protein in her urine. Doctors had spotted the dangerously high levels, despite Allyson’s healthy eating and training safely.

And the baby’s fetal heart rate began decelerating fast. She was rushed into the emergency room and barely had time to call her family members to fly in immediately. The surgery could not wait, doctors said. Baby Camryn was delivered at just a little over three pounds and seven ounces and whisked away seconds after being born. Allyson had barely seen her with her eyes, but her mama bear heart clasped her close.

Fortunately, Allyson and her first child, Camryn, after a month in NICU, emerged healthy from it. But the experience formed a difference in how the Olympian viewed her career and purpose.

“I experienced firsthand how vulnerable women can become professionally when they have children,” Allyson says. “Those experiences opened my eyes to systems that were failing women—from maternity protections in sports to the maternal health crisis in this country. I couldn’t unsee those inequities once I had lived them.”

Motherhood Made Her Voice Stronger

Describing herself as quiet and introverted, Allyson felt compelled to speak up. No one would have faulted her for focusing on her newborn baby or solely focusing on the early days of motherhood. But Allyson felt that motherhood had shifted something within her and invited her to say something. She had a deeper purpose weaving through her work now.

“Motherhood made me think more deeply about impact and what I wanted to leave behind,” Allyson says. “It gave me the courage to use my voice in a different way, especially to advocate for women and mothers.”

“I found a willingness to speak up that I hadn’t accessed before because the issue felt bigger than me. That experience taught me that strength isn’t only about what you can endure physically. Sometimes, strength is using your voice, even when it’s uncomfortable.”

Speaking Up for Moms in Need

Months after giving birth, Allyson went before the US House Ways and Means Committee and shared her testimony to draw attention to the dangers and risks in pregnancy and childbirth faced disproportionately by Black women.

Through the birth of her daughter, Allyson fought for maternal protections for herself and the women to follow. Her efforts resulted in a brand creating an 18-month maternal protection clause for mom athletes, so that they will not be penalized financially or dropped during and immediately after pregnancy.

“I had always thought of myself as an athlete, but motherhood pushed me into spaces I never imagined: advocacy, entrepreneurship, and eventually building companies centered around women,” Allyson states.

She also partnered with P&G to create the first-ever nursery at the Olympic Games.

“Looking back,” Allyson says. “I can see that motherhood wasn’t asking me to become less of myself. It was showing me that there were parts of myself I hadn’t discovered yet.”

How Motherhood Keeps Expanding Her Life

It’s 2019 in Des Moines, Iowa, at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championship. The track stretches before Olympian Allyson Felix. She runs this race well, considering she had an emergency C-section a few months ago. She doesn’t automatically qualify, but the US track coaches are deeply impressed by her numbers, her gumption and her veteran status. They invited her to represent the USA in the 4x400m relay race.

Does she do well? She breaks Usain Bolt’s all-time gold medal record. Yes, she does well. And she keeps doing well.

Returning Olympian. Racing powerhouse. Advocate. Entrepreneur. Mom. Not “or.” But also. Allyson’s purpose has expanded, and she's a champion for more than one role.

“Motherhood doesn’t have to erase your identity–it can expand it. And you don’t have to figure out what that looks like immediately. There is room for your children, your dreams, your ambition, and yourself.”

What an Olympic Champion and You Have in Common

Why would Momcozy choose Allyson Felix to discuss being a mom, and more? Because at the heart of Allyson’s unique story is the common thread that unites us in this community: motherhood.

“Motherhood is woven into every part of this journey,” Allyson says. “There are school drop-offs, bedtime, family responsibilities, and two little people whose lives don’t stop because mom has a workout.”

You may not be an Olympic champion (or you may be), but you also have a strong purpose that fuels you and dreams to achieve, whether in your cozy home or at an Olympic venue. You have roles to fill, whether a mom or a mom with a dream in motion. But the common thread is there: being a good mom and balancing out your life as best as you can.
