The Momcozy Wellness 1: First Impressions

Caitlyn Tivy, PT, DPT, OCS

I’ve previously reviewed other models of Momcozy pumps, and I’ve always appreciated their attention to detail when it comes to product design. It’s clear that Momcozy is motivated to create breast pumps and accessories that make the pumping experience easier and more comfortable for nursing parents.

How simple is the Wellness 1 to open and use out of the box?

When the Wellness 1 arrived, I was initially struck by the streamlined packaging: it was about half the size of previous Momcozy pumps I’ve reviewed. Ecoconscious consumers like me will appreciate the simplified shipping materials, and folks who value discreet packaging will find the Wellness 1 unobtrusive.

The Quick Start guide included with the kit was very clear and straightforward, making it easy to fit the flanges and start the pump. I appreciated the included QR codes with links to step-by-step videos: for auditory and visual learners who hate reading written instructions, these will be a big relief.

Flanges and Fit: Getting Started with the Momcozy Wellness 1

Brittany Dowell, CNM, WHNP-BC, IBCLC

How do I find the right flange fit?

A flange fits correctly when the nipple moves smoothly in and out of the tunnel part of the flange. If your nipple rubs the side of the tunnel, then it is too small. If your areolar tissue is getting pulled inward when you pump, the flange is too large.

The bottom line with flange fit is that it shouldn’t cause any pain or nipple damage, and it should not reduce your milk output.

Will the Momcozy W1 flanges work for me?

In most cases, yes! I appreciated that the W1 pump comes with four flange sizes: the white 24 mm, along with smaller 21 mm, 19 mm, and 17 mm inserts. This variety in sizing will make it simple for most users to find the right fit with the included pieces, saving you the hassle of immediately purchasing more accessories.

However, if you need a flange size larger than the 24 mm option, you will need to buy a larger flange for appropriate fit.

I also appreciated the materials Momcozy used for their flanges. The flanges and inserts are all made of silicone: they’re flexible, with a softer feel against the skin than typical plastic flanges.

Suction and Pumping Modes

Brittany

What are the pumping modes available?

The Momcozy W1 offers three pumping modes: Stimulate, Express, and Combination. The Stimulate mode pulls quickly but lightly to facilitate milk letdown. Once the letdown starts, you can switch to the expression mode.

Express pulls more deeply and slowly, mimicking what an infant does at the breast. Unlike some pumps I’ve used in the past, you cannot change the frequency of the pulls in either mode. I missed having that added control and functionality, but not having the ability to change frequency of the pulls wouldn’t be a make or break feature for me.

The Combination mode is a unique feature of the W1. When you select this option, the pump automatically toggles back and forth between the Stimulate and Express modes. I like having this as an option, but it’s hard to say whether it would make an appreciable difference in output or production. Worth a try, though!

What are the Wellness 1’s options for suction?

The W1 offers 12 levels of suction in both stimulation and expression mode, up to 295 mmHg, which is on par with other premium pumps.

For context, a baby who is actively feeding and efficiently removing milk creates suction forces ranging from 122-163 mmHg. You should consider using the highest strength suction that’s comfortable for you.

That last note about comfort is critical: cranking up the suction beyond a comfortable level won’t automatically create or remove more milk, and you could hurt yourself in the process.

You can easily adjust the W1’s suction strength by pressing either the minus or the plus button on the top. The buttons on top of each pump are simple and have clear icons to identify what setting you’ve selected. However, I found buttons a bit difficult to see and distinguish when I was wearing the pump inside a bra or shirt that obstructed my view.

Heat and Massage Features

Brittany

How can the W1’s warming and massage features help with pumping?

Warming

I was initially skeptical of this pump’s warming element, as heat can cause or increase inflammation in the breast. Fortunately, the W1’s built-in warming function, via their Heated DoubleFit™flange, was very subtle and mild. Momcozy notes on their website that they recommend avoiding the additional warmth if you or your healthcare provider note any inflammation in the breast.

Warmth can feel relaxing and can also help support milk removal while you’re pumping, but it’s unlikely to impact how much milk you produce. The best way to increase milk supply is to consistently and effectively remove milk. That said, if your breasts tend to feel quite tight when you’re pumping, gentle warmth can help you relax into the process. Some breastfeeding folks find that warmth also helps their milk flow start more easily. Because warming is integrated directly into the W1 pumps, they can save you the additional step of applying heat before pumping.

Note that warming may not be appropriate for those with breast inflammation, a risk of mastitis, or other heat sensitivity. Check in with your healthcare provider to address concerns before using the warming feature.

Massage

Almost any type of gentle stimulation to the breast can support bringing in and maintaining milk supply, as well as enhancing the action of the pump (or baby’s!) milk removal efforts. Some examples include:

  • Placing hands on either side of the breast and performing a gentle rolling movement
  • Doing breast compressions
  • Using a “typing” massage with your fingers around all the breast tissue, up to the collarbones and even into the armpits.

Lactation research has shown that breast massage techniques like these can increase milk production and output, which is why the W1’s massage feature may be especially useful. When we asked Momcozy about this feature, they shared that they designed the massage element to match the natural rhythm of breastfeeding. They’ve coined the name DuoRhythmic™Technology to describe its combination of circular massage and soft oscillations/vibrations. They deliberately made the massage feature gentle so it doesn’t feel like an aggressive, aggravating mechanical pulling.

This could be particularly beneficial because I find that using a wearable pump and a hands-on pumping technique simultaneously is quite challenging. With the built-in stimulation in the W1, you may not need as much hands-on assistance to increase letdown. Whether you’re dealing with a clogged duct, breast engorgement, or working to increase your milk supply, this rhythmic, vibrating massage can support your lactation goals without being too intense.

Please note that warmth and massage (as with any feature!) may not be right for certain situations or individuals. It’s always best to check with a trusted IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) who can give you guidance based on your own body and circumstances.

Ergonomics, Comfort, and Postural Considerations

Caitlyn

As a physical therapist who works with postpartum patients, I pay close attention to how medical devices and childcare products will affect bodies that are already under significant physical stress. As a tool you’ll use multiple times a day, your breast pump can impact your musculoskeletal health more than you might realize.

Is the Wellness 1 good for people with postpartum aches and pains?

You bet. In terms of overall comfort, the Wellness 1 holds up great. The body-contacting surfaces are made of soft, high-quality silicone that rest comfortably on the breast. The five massage nodules are subtle enough that

they don't create obvious pressure points or discomfort. For postpartum users dealing with breast tenderness, this kind of soft, comfortable interface is critical.

One ergonomic consideration of note: the Wellness One is slightly heavier and bulkier than previous MomCozy pumps I’ve reviewed. This is understandable, given its added features for warmth and massage. For most users this won't be a problem, but for those managing wrist pain, “mom thumb”, or other common upper extremity concerns, this may be a notable difference.

That said, the hands-free, wireless design of these pumps helps compensate for the added weight. Being untethered from a pump cord or bedside machine will give users the freedom to move around, change positions, and avoid the sustained, spine-rounding posture that so often accompanies traditional pumping setups.

The ability to pump while standing, walking, or simply sitting upright is an important advantage, especially for postpartum folks dealing with neck, shoulder, and/or upper back pain or tension.

Can I use the Momcozy W1 to track my output?

The LED display showing elapsed time and current suction level is a practical feature. For nursing parents who are carefully tracking pumping sessions and volumes, it’s quite convenient and efficient to have that information immediately.

The buttons on the top of the pump are also well-sized and responsive to light pressure: this is an important consideration for users who have dexterity limitations or wrist pain postpartum.

Milk Storage, Disassembly, and Cleaning

Brittany

How do I store the milk I pump with the W1?

With the Wellness 1, milk transfer and storage is easy:

  • Remove the motor piece by squeezing the two buttons on the sides of each pump
  • Open the top of the collection chamber
  • Pour milk into the bottle or storage bag

How do I clean my pump?

There are five (or six) pieces to clean and sterilize to ensure safety:

  • The milk collector, both the front and back pieces
  • The diaphragm
  • The valve
  • The flange (and flange insert if you’re using one).

As with all pump and bottle parts, you should wash all non-electronic pieces of the Wellness 1 in hot soapy water after each use. Additionally, you’ll need to sterilize each piece once a day.

Clean the protective cover as needed. If necessary, you can wipe off the motor piece with a damp cloth, but Momcozy notes that the motor should always stay dry to preserve functionality.

Assembly and disassembly are fairly simple, but both have a learning curve. Both Caitlyn and I needed to practice taking the pieces apart several times before it felt easy.

Daily Usability

Caitlyn

Is the W1 pump practical for daily use?

Sure is! On the practical side, both the milk reservoir and the assembled pump stand upright on their own. This might sound minor…until you've seen someone knock over a whole bottle of freshly pumped milk.

Like other Momcozy pumps I’ve reviewed, the W1 is quiet during operation. It's not completely silent, but it's unobtrusive enough that most users would be able to run the pump during a meeting or phone call. For parents on the go, this is a significant plus.

The charging port is sensibly positioned and protected from spills. The snap-on protective cover is a simple addition that goes a long way toward keeping the silicone surfaces clean between uses. If you’re dealing with pet hair, frequent travel, or simply the general chaos of a home with kids, the covers are a nice bonus.

As Brittany mentioned, assembling the Wellness 1 takes a bit of practice. I'd recommend running through it a few times before your first real pumping session so it doesn't feel fiddly when you're tired and your baby is hungry. Once you have the rhythm, though, the components separate easily and all the parts that contact milk or skin are fully washable.

Practicality and Portability

Brittany

Can I discreetly put on and start my pumps?

I found that placing the pumps into my bra was easy, but it wasn’t something I would be able to do with other people around. I’ve seen videos of lactating people sliding a pump into their bra through the top of their shirt with minimal need to adjust…but this isn’t the usual reality for most folks. More likely, you’ll want to find a private place to place and adjust your pumps first.

I found it difficult to wrestle the Wellness 1 pumps easily into my bra while also wearing a shirt. In order to ensure my nipple was properly aligned, I had to completely expose my breast before settling the pump into my bra. This could present a hurdle if you are hoping to wear the pumps at work or while you’re out and about.

Are the Wellness 1 pumps easy to pack and transport?

The W1 pumps are relatively lightweight and portable, but they aren’t as light or as slim as some of the other pumps on the market (including some other Momcozy pumps). Understandably, the additional features of warmth and massage add some bulk and weight.

Unlike some of the other wearable pumps on the market, the W1 pumps do not come with a carrying case, so you’d need to purchase one separately if you’re planning to travel with these pumps. When we asked

Momcozy about this, they shared that they intentionally designed the W1 without a separate case: they wanted to minimize additional bulk for those packing the pumps.

Price and Value

Caitlyn

Is the Wellness 1 pump affordable?

In terms of pricing, the Wellness 1 sits at the higher end of the wearable pump market. For parents weighing the cost, it helps to think about what you're paying for: this product combines heat, massage, and highly customizable suction settings in a single wireless device. It’s a high-quality pump set made from durable materials, and the convenience and comfort it provides may make it worth the expense.

US-based customers who carry an HSA or FSA may be able to offset the cost, as breast pumps are generally an eligible expense under both account types. If you're planning ahead, consider purchasing through one of those accounts to make the Wellness 1 considerably more affordable.

Additionally, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans are required to fully cover the cost of a breast pump. Some plans may require an upgrade fee for a premium wearable pump like the Wellness 1.

The Final Verdict

In our collaborative review, we found the Momcozy Wellness 1 to be a thoughtfully designed premium pump that combines warmth, massage, and hands-free convenience in a single, well-designed package.

For postpartum users navigating the physical demands of early parenthood, the Wellness 1’s wireless design, high-quality materials, and easily adjustable settings make it a strong choice, particularly for those dealing with musculoskeletal discomfort or reduced dexterity.

From a lactation standpoint, the Wellness 1’s suction performance is on par with other premium pumps, and the added heat and massage functions offer potentially useful support for letdown and milk removal. However, we'd always recommend working with an IBCLC to determine which features are right for your individual situation.

The higher price point is a real consideration for many potential users, but between HSA/FSA eligibility and potential partial insurance coverage, the Wellness 1 may be more financially accessible than it first appears. If you're looking for a wearable pump that goes beyond the basics, this one is worth a serious look.
