Momcozy M9 FAQ: How to Use, Clean, and Get the Most Out of Your Wearable Pump

Momcozy M9 FAQ: How to Use, Clean, and Get the Most Out of Your Wearable Pump

The reason you purchased Momcozy M9 (Mobile Flow) is because you wanted to control the app and pump quietly without a jumble of tubes. Good call. However, after the box is opened, questions begin. What is the actual way of running it? Will it fit into the dishwasher? How many ounces will be needed to make it overflow? Is it really worth next to the M5 or M6?

This is a straightforward answer sheet. Each section below corresponds to a question you'll often type into the search bar, and also to some of the content that you'd never see in the specs, but you'll see on Reddit and owner reviews. For a full sample routine, our guide to pumping with the M9 accompanies a full day of pumping. If you're still shopping, you can take a look at our entire wearable breast pump collection.

How to use the Momcozy M9, step by step

Always work with clean hands and clean parts. The M9 is a one piece, meaning the motor and the milk collector are in the same unit which sits in your bra.

  • Attach the flange (24 mm) to the collector and slide your size insert (17, 19, or 21 mm) into place, then place the main motor on top and secure it.
  • Center the nipple in the tunnel, press the flange flat to the breast with no space between them and secure the pumping bra to keep the flange snug.
  • To turn on: long press the power button. The LED lights in battery, mode, suction level and run time.
  • The mode is selected with just one press of the mode button: Stimulation to trigger let down, Expression to pull milk, or Mixed to alternate. All this can also be done in the app.
  • Suction runs 1 to 15. Begin low (level 2 or 3 for the first few minutes), then progress to Expression or Mixed and tighten up until you get a good stretch (not the pain).
  • Exercise for 15-20 minutes. Once in place, short press to pause, long press to power off, break the seal with a finger, and tilt forward as you remove it, otherwise you might spill.

A little word of advice, from experience, a higher level does not necessarily equate to more milk. Identify the place where it's firm yet agreeable and remain there. If it hurts, get down.

How to connect and use the M9 app

The M9 is one of the models that pairs with the Momcozy app, along with the Air 1, M5 Smart, and W1. (The S9 Pro, S12 family, basic M5, M6, and V1 Pro do not connect.) Pairing takes about a minute the first time, and after that the pump shows up on your home screen automatically.

How to connect the M9 to the app

  1. Download the Momcozy app from the App Store or Google Play and register yourself and log in to the app.
  2. Switch on Bluetooth on your phone settings. Start or run your pump motor. If they are run in pairs, turn them both on and leave them by your phone.
  3. On the app, go to Devices at the bottom. Tap the plus button in the middle for the first pump. On the second pump, press the plus button in the top right and select Device.
  4. When the app requests for the device type, select "Mobile Flow" (this is the name we set for the M9) or "Air 1". The app then checks for the nearest pumps.
  5. Once it appears, tap your M9 and then tap Completed. From then on it remains in the home screen.

What can trip people up is the following: The M9 is set for left or right with a little physical L/R switch on the motor, not in the app itself. If the app displays an orange banner indicating that both pumps are pointing in the same direction, switch one of the pumps to the other direction and the app will update automatically.

What you can do in the app

  • Remote control. Press the pump card on the home screen to go to the control page. Then you can switch on or off, click the large Start or Pause button and adjust suction up or down by using the plus and minus buttons. Begin at low levels and gradually increase. Once you start the app, you can never skip to the next level and will progress through one level at a time.
  • Switch modes. Alternate from Stimulation – Expression – Mixed whenever you want. Customize modes can also be used for Milk Boost or Milk Relief and you can create your own routine and save it.
  • Track output. At the end of each session, the app will display a window where to record the volume of milk. Records can also be added manually from the Statistics screen or the small bottle icon on the top right of the control screen.
  • Dual control. A Bilateral Control button now appears at the top with two M9 pumps connected (one to L, one to R). Once it's on, every change you make affects both sides simultaneously.
  • Units and clock.Tap on Me, then Settings to toggle between ounces - milliliters, and 12 hour / 24 hour clock.

In most cases, a lost connection during the session can be remedied with a simple Bluetooth off/on from phone settings (not the quick panel), a long press on the pump to power it down and up, and pairing again. If the app is being stubborn, the hardware buttons continue to function.

How to clean the Momcozy M9

Disassemble after each individual session. We can't say it enough times, as milk film is where the bacteria grow. The flange, the flange insert, the diaphragm, the silicone membrane (valve), the collector and the cap are washable. The motor main unit is never put in water.

  • Remove the main from the flange, remove the flange from the collector, twist the cap to open and remove the diaphragm from the flange.
  • Wash those parts under a warm stream of water with a mild dish soap. A soft brush is helpful in reaching the small tunnels.
  • Rinse thoroughly and place on a clean drying rack or towel. Let dry in the air before reassembling.
  • Only use a damp cloth to wipe the outside of the motor. Do not immerse it and do not place the cable or adaptor in the vicinity of water.

Here is the part people get wrong: the M9 is not verified as dishwasher safe. We recommend hand washing. Safety of use in a dishwasher is not confirmed and the heat and strong detergent may cause warping of the soft silicone material. Our tips for cleaning breast pump parts cover the routine that we recommend for all pumps in terms of general hygiene. If you prefer to read the clinical baseline, the CDC also has a plain language guide to cleaning and sterilizing breast pumps.

How to sterilize the Momcozy M9

Cleaning removes milk. If any remains, then it is destroyed by sterilizing. Repeat at least once daily, more frequently if your baby is newborn or premature.

  • Boiling: Place the washable parts that need cleaning in water and boil for 5 to 10 minutes. Do not keep them against the sides of the pot as they will get distorted.
  • Steam bag: Momcozy uses the microwave steam bag once a day, following the instructions on the bag.
  • Electric steam sterilizer: fine, but don't exceed 10 minutes.

Two hard no's. Don't use a UV sterilizer on these pieces. They have a shorter life when the heat is above 110°C and it poses a safety risk. And do not put anything with the motor in any sterilizer. For more information on what can be used with what bottle/pump part, check out our bottle and pump part sterilizing FAQ. If you're comparing methods, the FDA's overview of breast pumps will give you an education on why pumps are considered medical products.

How to take apart and reassemble the M9

Disassembly is the same four moves used in cleaning, and is accomplished in less than a minute after a couple of times:

  1. Disassemble the main unit from the flange assembly.
  2. Lift the flange up to remove it from the milk collector.
  3. Unlock the cap by twisting open at the bottle mouth (follow the unlock icon).
  4. Remove the diaphragm assembly from the flange.

To reinsert, put in reverse order. Secure the cap then press the flange to the mouth of the collector and place the motor on top of the collector. Ensure that the diaphragm and the membrane lie flat otherwise weak suction and leaks will typically occur, which is usually due to a crooked seal. Reassemble only when the boiled parts have cooled and wash hands before.

How to charge the Momcozy M9

M9 charger supports USB Type C through a 5V/2A adapter, and takes around 2.5 hours to charge from empty. With a full charge, expect approximately 150 minutes of run-time, or 4 to 5 sessions. If you're short on time, a quick 12 minute top up will suffice for one session.

The port is on the back of the motor. Charge it before it can be stored for the day for future use. When the light comes on, but the pump doesn't, the issue may be with the button, not the battery.

How to reset the Momcozy M9

A soft reset is used to clear most glitches if the pump freezes, throws an error or the buttons stop responding. Not a complete factory reset, but resets running state:

  • Hold down the power button until the pump is completely stopped.
  • Hold for approximately 10-15 seconds to allow the system to flush.
  • To restart, press the power button once again.

If you're having problems pairing Bluetooth, rather, turn the pump on (2 seconds on power button) and then turn your phone off and on in the settings menu (not the quick settings panel), and attempt to pair again. Long-pressing to turn on and off resets the connection as well. Once this doesn't resolve the error, contact support; it may be a hardware issue and not a software glitch.

How to empty and store milk from the M9

The M9 pours easily into a 150 ml container with a flat base, making it easy to stand it up on a counter as you work on the other side. To empty:

  • Slowly remove the collector from the flange.
  • If you want to store milk in the milk container, screw on the storage lid; otherwise, pour the milk into your preferred container for storage, such as a milk bottle or milk bag.
  • Label and refrigerate or freeze according to the usual precautions for milk. If you are looking for the time and temperature windows, you'll have a good pumping and milk storage reference with La Leche League.

How many ounces does the Momcozy M9 hold?

The collector has 150ml (about 5 ounces) in its collector. In reality, leave a bit of head space. We recommend emptying near the 5oz mark instead of full to the top as it is here where overflow occurs. There is a slight downside in the smaller capacity of the M9 but if you are an oversupplier and regularly pump over 5 oz per side, a larger capacity model may work best for you (M6 at 6 oz and S12 Pro Quick at 7 oz).

Does the Momcozy M9 stop when the collector is full?

No, it will not turn off automatically. The LED will also alert the user to milk overflow if the collector is becoming full, but the motor continues to operate. Must monitor the level and either stop or empty before reaching the top. A few owners report that they sometimes do not realize it is full, and milk leaks out the top if they don't know it is full. Take the reminder as a reminder, not as a cutting, and check the container mid session if a high producer.

Is the Momcozy M9 hospital grade?

It's a question that's asked in two different ways and that has two different answers depending on what you are asking. The M9 isn't a clinical, multi user hospital grade pump. A real hospital grade unit is constructed for use by many mothers in a facility. The M9 is an individual wearable designed for one person.

However, it does offer hospital grade suction strength. Pulls up to 300 mmHg which is the same force as our V1 Pro and M6. So, if your question is, does it have the power of a hospital grade pump, the answer is yes. If you have a question of "can it be used as a shared clinic pump" the answer is, No. For a health care facility, multi user model, please view our hospital grade breast pump collection.

Is the Momcozy M9 dishwasher safe?

No, not in the sense of a proven method. The milk contact parts should be hand washed. Momcozy has not verified the safety of the dishwasher, and the use of high temperature and detergent may reduce the service life of silicone and clear collector. The motor unit is never dishwasher safe on any reading. Rinse the parts only with hand wash and then boil/steam sterilize them once a day and you will have the longest life from the parts.

Is the Momcozy M9 leak proof?

Honestly, it is better than some and not perfect. The M9 features a DoubleFit flange, to reduce leakage through the flange, and a sealed collector that reduces leakage around the collector. The flat base eliminates the possibility of tipping and spilling, which is a concern with round bottomed pumps. We're not claiming "leak proof" but we will make it our goal to come through with that. Many owners state that they notice milk leaking out of the flange, particularly when bending over or if the flange size is incorrect. The actual fixes that work: The size of the insert matters more than the size of your areola; Keep the seal flat while pumping; Don't lean forward when you are pumping. Our sizing guide for pumping bras will ensure they fit well and sealing is half the battle when it comes to no leakage.

Momcozy M5 vs M9: what is the difference?

The M5 line is the value pick. The M9 is the control and data pick. Here is the side by side:

Note on the naming: M5 is normally the M5 Smart (app version spec in the table). The entry level option is a less fancy basic M5 without the app, and it's cheaper. In either case, the control and data option is the M9 line while the budget option is the M5 line.

When to choose the M5 line vs the M9

Choose the M5 (Smart) if you are looking for the simplest working pump, the level of comfort and the feel is more important than an app, and you don't necessarily need to record every session. The budget-friendly easy wearing route is the M5 line, while the M5 Smart retains the ability to pair apps if desired. A good starting point pump or standby pump.

Choose the M9 if you need the maximum suction adjustment (15 levels as compared to 9), tracking output and settings via the app, and a flatter base that will stand upright on the counter when you are not using it (under 42 dB) It's the more suitable option for working moms that need some data and discretion, and don't mind paying a bit more.

Momcozy M6 vs M9: which is better?

These two sit close in price and both hit 300 mmHg, so the real choice is fine control and an app versus a bigger container and a lower price. Here is the side by side:

When to choose the M6 vs the M9

Choose the M6 if you pump a high volume per session, don't care about app tracking, easiest and most beginner friendly wearable and lower price.. The value pick, still with complete suction of 300 mmHg. Our M6 vs M9 comparison puts them side by side.

Choose the M9 if you want to fine tune suction (15 levels compared to 9) and control and log each session from the app, or enjoy a quieter pump (under 42 dB). A little bit more, and you sacrifice a little size in your container, but you receive the most data-driven M series pump. The Air 1 vs M9 and W1 vs M9 (Wellness vs Smart) pieces apply to those who are considering the Air 1 or the W1 as well.

Is the Momcozy M9 worth it?

Yes, for the right mom. The M9 is the quiet one (under 42 dB) and has the most granular control in the M series and an app that actually tracks output and reminds to pump. For any working mom who demands data and discretion, it qualifies for $269.99. The upright disclosures: It's the heaviest of the M-series wearables at 302 g, the 5 oz container is not as large as oversuppliers would like, and a decent number of proprietors note flange leaks or wish the parts were sturdier. If they are in your list of deal-breakers, the M6 or M5 Smart will save you some money. Check out the larger selection of electric breast pump lines to see them all side-by-side.

Common M9 questions from real owners (and how to fix them)

We've scoured through the owner threads and reviews to uncover issues that the manual doesn't mention. Below are each one of them with an actual working fix - not just a gripe.

Why does my M9 leak at the flange, and how do I stop it?

It's not the pump that is usually at fault, but the insert size. The size of the insert should not be your areola size, it should be your nipple size. The flange should be pushed flat and there should be no space between the flange and the rest of the pump; it should be avoided to bend over or lean forward in the process of pumping. A soft cushion insert over the flange makes leaks less of an issue. We have a pumping bra sizing guide to help you match the size, since most leaks result from a bad seal.

How do I know when my M9 is getting full?

The LED shows a milk overflow reminder as the collector fills, but the motor does not auto shut off, so you have to watch it. The easy fix: set a phone timer for 15 minutes and empty once you get near the 5 oz line rather than waiting for the brim. If you are a high producer, check the level mid session so you are not surprised by a spill.

The M9 has a lot of small parts. How do I keep them clean and know when to replace them?

It is more pieces than a simple pump flange, insert, diaphragm, membrane, collector and cap. Hand wash after each session and boil or Steam daily. Be sure to change the silicone every 1-3 months or more frequently if you use the pump regularly. The timing for the replacement of each breast pump part is described in our breast pump parts replacement guide. Always have an extra set of parts, so no session is lost because a part is wearing out.

My M9 keeps dropping its Bluetooth connection. How do I fix it?

Pairing can be flaky on some phones. Toggle Bluetooth off and on from your phone settings (not the quick panel), long press the pump to power down and back up, then pair again. Make sure the two motors are set to different sides with the physical L/R switch, or the app shows a same direction warning. The hardware buttons work fine on their own, so you can always finish a session without the app if it will not cooperate.

The hard flange hurts. What can I do?

This was highly subjective as to comfort and some owners complained of some induration of the firm plastic. A cushion insert helps to soften it. In most cases, it is not the size of the insert that causes pain, but the degree of suction, so try a size down, and lower the suction until it feels like a firm tug, not a painful tug. If it is painful, stop and re-evaluate fit before the next session.

None of these would be exclusive to the M9 model, and many moms enjoy using it once they get the dial in. The pattern is consistent: If you get the size of the flange correct, the M9 will behave. Skip ahead and you'll be battling leaks and low output.

Bottom line

If you prefer a quiet, app controlled wearable with the best suction adjustment in the M series and hospital grade suction, then the Momcozy M9 will be a great choice, just watch out for the extra weight and 5oz container. Just get the size of the flange right, hand wash the parts, and watch the level, and it will do its job. The M6 or M5 Smart are more suitable if more capacity or a lower price is required.
